A Dartmoor pub is getting rave reviews for its cosy atmosphere, brilliant food and dog friendly attitude. The Skylark Inn, located at Clearbrook near Yelverton, has received 445 'excellent' reviews on Tripadvisor.

I visited for the first time last weekend - January 4 - and was instantly impressed by the warm and welcoming vibe. Coming in from a freezing, wet wintry walk, I was so pleased to see an open fire heating the pub.

I was even more delighted to see so many dogs in the pub. While we did not bring our dogs, I absolutely loved watching the dogs wag their tails as another entered.

I noticed the staff were so attentive to their four-legged customers too - bringing them cooked chicken and checking with the owners before giving them a well-deserved treat.

Not only is the pub perfect for a cold day, the food was absolutely delicious. The menu was pretty extensive for a village pub and every time a meal came out for another table, I couldn't believe the portion sizes.

The fish and chips, Skylark burger and the lasagne definitely gave me food envy as they were brought out to other customers. As it was lunchtime, I opted for the cheese ploughmans.

You've probably guessed by now that it was a huge portion, with hefty chunks of cheese, a freshly baked baguette, the nicest coleslaw I've ever tasted, pickle and plenty of salad.

It set me back £12.90 which I think is very reasonable for a pub lunch and contained the right amount of everything. Sometimes I find that a ploughman's lunch can have way too much salad, or not enough cheese - but this was perfectly balanced and highly enjoyable.

My partner had the Jail Ale beer battered cod and chips, which also came with peas. It was a very generous portion of fish and the chips were cooked to perfection. The cod was priced at £16.90, which again I think is reasonable.

As well as the varied menu, the Skylark offers a traditional Sunday roast each week, with pork, beef, chicken and vegetarian nut roast options.

And I'm not the only one rating the pub highly. David Gibbs took to Tripadvisor to leave a five-star review after an incredible Christmas dinner experience.

He said: "12 of us were there today for a Christmas dinner. Great experience. [The] food was well cooked, hot and plentiful. Added to which the service was pretty good as well. Thanks to Vic and all the staff for an excellent meal."

Florence L also praised the pub. She said: "The Sunday dinner was absolutely incredible. Would recommend. Lovely owner and great service. Amazing pub. Definitely going back."

Alina also praised the 'cosy' vibes. She said: "A few weeks ago my fiancé and I went to The Skylark as he insisted I try a traditional English roast dinner.

"We were seated promptly, the fire was lit which made it really warm and cosy. We were served by Grace (the girl with long nails) who was fantastic. She made us laugh, made us feel really welcome and made sure that we had everything we needed.

"The Sunday roast was delicious. I went for a mixture of beef and pork. The meat was very juicy and succulent. The cauliflower cheese was mouthwatering even though I don’t usually opt for cauliflower. The roast came with plenty of gravy and fresh vegetables. I wish I grew up in England to have this wonderful dish everyday, I will definitely be returning!"
